Assessment of Yellow Perch in Green Bay
Status: In Progress
Location: Bay of Green Bay
Description: The Lake Michigan Fisheries Forum arranged a series of
three workshops to engage interested public in identifying potential solutions to Green
Bay yellow perch issues. Generally the workshop participants desired to conserve the
existing Green Bay yellow perch stocks through better management and understanding of
predatory and habitat influences. Both Forum members and other workshop participants
expressed a need to reexamine the way the yellow perch population abundance is assessed.
This includes updating the Walters Model, considering new population sampling methods
and sampling sites.
In coordination and cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the
Green Bay Fishery Resources Office will provide: 1) Assistance and expertise of John
Netto, fish population model expert, in the development of an updated statistical
catch-at-age model of yellow perch in Green Bay, with a fully implemented model as a
deliverable product, 2) assistance in the evaluation of the lampara seine as an
assessment or commercial fishing gear to capture Green Bay fish species, and other
yellow perch assessment activities deemed appropriate by the Department and the Fish
and Wildlife Service, 3) assistance in the review and consolidation of yellow perch
assessment records and data into an electronic format, and 4) a review of the temporal
and spatial scale of assessment methods currently used by the Department to assess
yellow perch in Green Bay.
Benefits: Work accomplished will produce information needed to meet the
goal of self-sustaining fish populations in Green Bay.
Restoration Goal(s): Fishery Resource Enhancement
Timeline: Project will be carried through to September 30, 2003.
