Avian Influenza

Information for Wildlife Rehabilitators

While H5N1 has not been detected in North America, here are some suggestions of basic sanitation practices, aside from those required in the Wildlife Rehabilitation Rule, NR19.77 (6) (PDF, 153KB), to protect your health and that of the wildlife you treat.

  • Consider wearing disposable gloves, and immediately wash hands and exposed skin with soap and water after handling individual birds or associated materials. Also consider wearing protective eyewear or a face shield when working with birds.
  • Quarantine all birds entering the facility for a minimum of 48 hours.
  • House birds separately from other wildlife.
  • Develop infection control procedures for handling birds that die or are euthanized.
  • Discontinue the use of uncooked poultry as a food item for all animals.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke, and refrain from touching your face when handling birds or cleaning associated materials.
  • If an unusual bird mortality is observed (such as a large number of dead birds) contact your local DNR service center or call the DNR Bureau of Wildlife Management at 608-266-8204.
