Prairie Restorations
The projects began with seeding a 20-acre area north of the walk-in sites.
The others are a five-acre plot in the woods north of the Group Campground
and a 55-acre area along Highway 69 south of County Trunk NN. If you are
interested in helping with these restorations as a volunteer, please contact
park staff.
Prairies are burned, mowed and seeded to restore them to their original
condition.

Hunting
In late April, during the spring
turkey season, disabled hunters are allowed to hunt wild turkey at
New Glarus Woods by permit only. Four permits are issued for each of the
three hunting periods. Each hunting period starts on a Wednesday, and ends
the following Sunday. Hunting time is one hour before sunrise until 5 p.m.
Hunting is restricted to the area south of County Highway NN. The
walnut trail is closed to hiking during this time.
Deer Hunting Seasons and Information
Accessibility
Rest rooms accessible to people with disabilities are available in the
group camping area. There is an accessible family campsite in the Lead
Circle Campground, an accessible group campsite in the group camp area,
and accessible picnic tables in the parks as well. For wildlife viewing,
there is an accessible wildlife blind on the Walnut Trail. Please ask
the park staff for assistance with any special needs you have due to mobility
or health problems.
Pets
Your pet is welcome, with a few restrictions.
All pets must be under control at all times, on a leash less than 8 feet
long. Pets are not allowed in picnic areas or buildings and cannot be
left unattended. You are expected to clean up after your pet. If your
pet's behavior or noise interferes with other's enjoyment of the park,
you may be ticketed and evicted from the park.
Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park
If you enjoy our park, you may wish to express your appreciation through
a gift of money, materials, or equipment, or volunteer services. Gifts
help Wisconsin state parks provide facilities and services that other
wise would not be possible. Local volunteers have formed the Friends
of New Glarus Woods State Park [exit DNR] to raise funds and to help
park staff with operations of the park. Members help with prairie
restoration, interpretive programs, concessions, and more. If you would
like to know more, ask the park
staff for information.
