Lake Kegonsa State Park, south of Wisconsin's state capital, Madison, offers a natural, peaceful atmosphere beside a glacier-hewed lake.

Selecting one of the 80 beautiful campsites nestled among the oaks can be a difficult task. After setting up camp, visitors can hike a trail, enjoy the beach, launch their boat, or have a picnic in the park.

Lake Kegonsa offers swimming, fishing, water-skiing, sailing, and motor boating. The lake covers 3,209 acres and is more than 30 feet deep. Park visitors enjoy the lake's excellent fishing.

The 342-acre park of oak woods, prairie and wetland marsh was established in 1962 and officially opened on August 12, 1966. Today, Lake Kegonsa State Park eagerly awaits its visitors, ready to give them a quality recreational experience.

Park Facilities

  • 5.1 miles of hiking trails (0.6 miles of designated hiking trails when ski trails are open)
  • 5.5 miles of cross-country ski trails
  • There are no bicycle trails in the park, but bicycles are welcome on the paved park roads.
  • .75 mile of lake shore

Hours

The park is open year-round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. All visitors who are not registered campers must leave the park from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The campground is open from May 1 to October 31.

Fees

Each vehicle entering the park must have a park admission sticker on its windshield. You can buy your park sticker at the park office when staff is available or at the self-registration station next to the office when the office is closed.

Trail passes are not required on the hiking or cross-country ski trails in Lake Kegonsa State Park, but the park office sells annual trail passes for use at other Wisconsin state parks or state trails.

How to Get There

From Madison: Take the Beltline (US Highway 12/18) east past Interstate 90. Turn right on Highway AB. At the T-intersection (Highway MN), turn left. Turn right on Door Creek Road. The park is at the other end of Door Creek Road on the right hand side.

From the Southeast: From Interstate 90, take exit 147 ( Highway N - Stoughton and Cottage Grove). Turn left off the exit ramp toward Stoughton. Turn right on Koshkonong Road. At the T-intersection, take a left on Door Creek Road. The park is at the other end of Door Creek Road on the right hand side.

From the Northwest: From Interstate 90, take exit 147 (Highway N - Stoughton and Cottage Grove) off of I90. Take a right off the exit ramp toward Stoughton. Turn right on Koshkonong Road At the T-intersection, take a left on Door Creek Road. The park is on Door Creek Road on the right side.

From Interstate 94: Take exit 244 (Highway N). Take Highway N south toward Stoughton. Go through Cottage Grove. You will pass over Interstate 90. Turn right on Koshkonong Road At the T-intersection, go left on Door Creek Road The park is on Door Creek Road on the right hand side.
