Boat and Shore Fishing Access — Quick Tips

This page identifies the purpose and function of buttons on the web mapping system and further describes system disclaimers.

Disclaimer

Information pertaining to boat launches and shore fishing sites may be incorrect or incomplete and is subject to change without notice. DNR staff have not verified all boat launch and shore fishing site information. At this time the shore fishing maps only includes sites that were funded and/or developed by the Department of Natural Resources. For other boat launch or shore fishing sites, please contact the county, city, village, or township listed in the information box for conditions.

Layers tabThe Layers tab gives you the ability to turn on/off different map layers such as roads, rivers, cities, state managed lands, trout streams, deer management units, air photos, topographic lines, and more at different resolutions on the map.

Legend tabThe Legend tab indicates what the map symbols represent.

Find Location tabThe Find Location tab allows you to automatically zoom to specific information based on county, waterbody name, DNR property name, city or village, county, civil town, township/range/section, latitude / longitude coordinate, WTM coordinate, UTM coordinate, Delorme Atlas page number, or USGS 24K Quad. By selecting one of the options, the map will change to show the area that you have selected.

Print tabThe Print tab allows you to create a copy of the map you've selected in pdf format. Once you create the map, you can save it and/or email it.

What is Public Boat Access tab What is Shore Fishing tabThe What is Public Boat Access/Shore Fishing tabs provides a brief overview of the meaning behind this website, the particular theme, and user instructions on how to easily access information in this site.

Help tabThe Help tab gives descriptions of the map tools on the white bar above the map.

Themes tab"Themes" are different map views already created. The benefit to using a "theme" is you do not have to turn map layers on/off, the layers will automatically draw the more you zoom in/out. There are 2 different themes in this web mapping system, Boat Access sites and Shore Fishing sites.

Full State buttonThe Full State buttom changes the view of the map to show the entire state of Wisconsin.

Zoom In buttonThe Zoom In button allows you to window into a particular area of interest to see more detail. You can do this in two ways. Using the mouse, "left click" on the Zoom In button and then:

  • "left click" a point on the map you wish to be the center of your selected area (one "click" zooms in approximately 2X, you can do this as many times as you want until you have the right extent defined), or:
  • define a window by "left clicking" on a point and, keeping the mouse button depressed, "pull" the rectangle being formed until it covers the area of interest and release the mouse button.

If you have zoomed in too far, use the Zoom Out button to "back out" (approximately 2X each "click") until the appropriate area has been defined.

Zoom Out buttonClicking the map with the Zoom Out tool active causes the map to "back out" so you can see approximately 2 times more each "click". The map will be centered at the point clicked.

Zoom Last buttonClick the Zoom Last button, then click on the map to go back to the previous map extent.

Move buttonThe Move tool (also referred to as "pan") is used to move the area shown in the map window to the left, right, up or down. This is accomplished by left clicking the mouse cursor on the Move button to activate, moving the mouse cursor over the approximate center of the map and then, keeping the left button depressed, dragging the map window until the adjusted area of interest is displayed. Release the mouse button.

Identify buttonThe idenify button gives you additional data on those features that are visible on a screen when you click the button and then click on the site of interest. You may "Zoom In" on any area of the map to get better resolution before selecting your site.
