Incinerator Operator CertificationWhat is a Certified Operator?Ch. NR 499, Wis. Adm. Code [PDF exit DNR] has been created as authorized by the 1989 Wisconsin Act 335 and amended by the 1991 Wisconsin Act 300. The Legislature created s. 144.31 (3), Wis. Stats., which contains the requirement for developing a program of certification for persons participating in, or responsible for, the operation of solid waste treatment facilities that burn solid waste. Certification LevelsThere are two Grade Levels of Operator Certification requiring training and examination:
In addition to the two grade levels, there is also Interim Chief Facility Operator. An Interim Chief Facility appointment is provided temporarily in the absence of a permanent Chief Facility Operator. Please see s. NR 499.04, Wis. Adm. Code for more information. Continuing EducationEvery certified Chief Facility Operator and Shift Operator is required to complete four hours of continuing education during the term of certification. Acceptance of Refresher Training documentation by the Department will be based on the relevance to the operator's certification type and degree of professional development.
