Youth waterfowl hunting skills workshop Sept. 13

The Department of Natural Resources in conjunction with the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association and Wern Valley Sportsmen Club will host a youth waterfowl hunting skills workshop on Saturday, September 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wern Valley Sportsmen Club, S36W269657 Wern Way in Waukesha.

Participants will spend most of the day outside learning the field aspects of waterfowl hunting and lunch will be provided. The workshop will expose young people to trap shooting, dog training, duck ID, decoy setting, small boat safety and waterfowl ecology. On the following Saturday, September 20, young hunters will join with a mentor for a waterfowl hunt on an area wetland. Hunting opens at 6:10 a.m., but the exact meeting times will be determined by the young hunters and their mentors on the Sept. 13.

Any 12 to 15-year-old who has completed a hunter education course may participate. The workshop is free but registration is limited to 20 young people on a first come, first serve basis. To register contact the DNR Waukesha Service Center at (262) 574-2100 before Wednesday, September 10.

Learn to Waterfowl Hunt Oct. 11-12

The Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association (WWA), Beaver Dam Conservation Club, Final Approach, and Ducks Unlimited will host a Learn to Waterfowl Hunt Weekend October 11-12. The program will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Beaver Dam Conservation Club on Saturday, Oct. 11, and then on Sunday, Oct. 12, students will head to the field from 5 a.m. to noon to participate in a waterfowl hunt with an experienced mentor. Anyone interested in attending needs to fill out an application which are available at the DNR Horicon Service Center, 1210 N. Palmatory St., or by contacting Mark Kakatsch at 262-567-1300. Completion of a hunter safety course is not required to take part in this hunting skills weekend. Among the day’s topics will be waterfowl identification and biology, waterfowl hunting tactics of blinds and decoy placement, duck and goose calling, dog handling and safety. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice their shooting skills. Presentations will be given by experienced waterfowl hunters and DNR staff. All materials will be provided and if your name is selected to participate, you will be required to pay a $10 registration fee.
