Step 2 - Discovery and Inventory

The Discovery and Inventory step concentrates on discovering and recognizing the healthy, safe and environmentally sound practices and activities your school already has in place and what may be missing. It includes a Wisconsin Green & Healthy Schools Assessment covering energy, waste & recycling, and water and any two of the following: indoor air quality, chemicals, mercury, school facilities and grounds, integrated pest management, transportation, and community. In addition to completing the Assessment, each school needs to meet minimum requirements listed on the Green & Healthy Schools Requirements Chart.

How to complete the Discovery and Inventory Step

  1. Complete five sections of the Green & Healthy Schools Assessment including energy, waste & recycling, and water and any two of the seven other topics.
  2. Use the Assessment to determine if your school meets all the criteria under the Discovery and Inventory column of the Green & Healthy Schools Requirements Chart [PDF 40KB]. If your school does not meet all the criteria, work on a plan to determine how your school intends to meet these criteria. Use the Resources as a guide.
  3. After your school completes all the activities listed above and meets the Discovery and Inventory criteria, fill out the Green & Healthy Schools Assessment Verification [PDF 151KB] and mail it to:

    WI Department of Natural Resources
    Green & Healthy Schools Program
    Attn. Tessa Jilot WA/5
    P.O. Box 7921
    Madison, WI 53707-7921

Congratulations, now you're ready to start Step 3 - Action and Implementation.

Your school will receive a Wisconsin Green & Healthy Schools "Under Construction" Certificate and stickers and will be listed on this web site to recognize the ongoing commitment your school has made in the journey to become a Wisconsin Green & Healthy School!
