The Upper Green Bay GMU is heavily forested with 63% of the land considered timberland. Most of this is located in central and northern Marinette County and northern Oconto County.
Forest acreageThe area of timberland in the Upper Green Bay GMU has increased by 10,170 acres or 1% over the past decade. The most recent survey (2001-2005) indicates that productive forest land makes up about 1.1 million acres or 64% of the total land area of the GMU. Forest typesAspen is the most common forest type, accounting for 21% of timberland acreage. Maple-dominated types, sugar maple/beech/yellow birch, hard maple/basswood and upland red maple, make up another 22% of timberland area. Bottomland forest types, such as black ash/elm/red maple and northern white cedar, make up 14% of acreage. Red maple, northern white cedar and red pine together make up 35% of total volume. Ratio of growth to removalsNet annual growth of trees (50.7 million cubic feet) in the Upper Green Bay GMU exceeds annual removals (13.3 million cubic feet) by about 280%. Tamarack, eastern hemlock, and quaking aspen account for 18%, 14%, and 14%, respectively, of growing stock removals. Habitat typeAbout a third of the timberland in the Upper Green Bay GMU is classified as either mesic-wet mesic or lowland. Another 13% is very dry-dry. The national forests, county, municipal and state governments own the remaining 39% of forest land.
