Lakeshore GMUBelow are statistics, charts and general information on the Lakeshore GMU. All chart and map links open in a separate window. Three counties, Manitowoc, Door and Kewaunee counties, make up 90% of the land area of the Lakeshore GMU. Only 23% of the GMU is forested and about half of this is in Door County.
Forest acreageThe area of timberland in the Lakeshore GMU increased by about 19,400 acres or 8% over the past decade. The most recent survey (2001-2005) indicates that productive forest land makes up about 262,423 acres or 23% of the total land area of the GMU. Forest typesBottomland types, mainly northern white-cedar, black ash/american elm/red maple, and lowland red maple, make up about 34% of timberland acreage with sugar maple-dominated types accounting for another 23%. Northern white cedar accounts for the highest percent of volume or 23%. Red maple and sugar maple make up 19% and green, white and black ash together account for 15% of growing stock volume. Ratio of growth to removalsNet annual growth of trees (14.2 million cubic feet) in the Lakeshore GMU exceeds annual removals (2.4 million cubic feet) by 486%. Sugar maple accounts for 30% of all removals and green, white and black ash together account for 50% of growing stock removals Habitat typeOver a third or 38% of all timberland in the Lakeshore GMU is classified as either mesic-wet mesic or lowland, and another 23% consists of mesic habitat types. Undefined types are common in this GMU due to forestland fragmentation and human impacts.
