Please report all suspect emerald ash borer findings by either calling the toll free emerald ash borer hotline at 1-800-462-2803 or submitting a report online at www.emeraldashborer.wi.gov/reporteab.jsp.

In order to best inform our emerald ash borer responders please be prepared to provide the following information if possible.

  • Do you have an ash tree? (Mountain ash (Sorbus spp.) is not a known host of emerald ash borer.) Do you need help determining if your tree is an ash? [PDF, 627KB]
  • What symptoms are you seeing?
    • Dying ash with sprouts along the stem or at the base of the tree?
    • D-shaped exit holes in the bark?
    • Winding, S-shaped tunnels under the bark?
    • Bullet-shaped, iridescent green beetles present from June-August?
    • Woodpecker activity on the tree?
    • Dieback of the upper crown?
  • If you saw a metallic green beetle, where was it (on the ground, flying, in a tree)? Were you able to collect it?
  • Are you familiar with the commonly encountered emerald ash borer look-a-likes? [exit DNR]. More information on native borers and emerald ash borer look-alikes is contained in this MSU Extension Bulletin [PDF, 1MB].
  • Is it possible to take digital photos of the emerald ash borer-like symptoms you see and send them to us?
