Seed Purchase Program

The State Nursery Program requires large quantities of tree and shrub seed each year in order to meet reforestation goals in Wisconsin. The state nurseries strive to use only quality seed from locally adapted native trees and shrubs. Each year a large portion of this seed is purchased from local collectors. If you are interested in collecting and selling seed to the state nurseries, please read the following information carefully before you invest the time and effort into collecting.

Getting started

The first step is to contact your nearest state nursery prior to collecting seed. Since the types, quantities, and prices of seed purchased by the State Nursery Program vary from year to year, it is important to receive the latest information. Purchase of a seed type will cease once the collection goals have been reached for the year.

Seed Types

Get current information and a list of what species of seeds we are purchasing in the Seed Collectors Newsletter [PDF, 62KB]

Get permission

Before collecting, check regulations. Many public lands require a permit. On private lands, you must get permission from the landowner.

Where do I take the seed...

The State Nursery Program sets up a network of buying stations across the state. Please contact your nearest state nursery for information on a buying station near you.

Seed Cleaning and Storage

You must store your seed in a cool, dry location and deliver the seed to a buying station or state nursery as soon as possible to prevent seed from overheating or molding. Each seed type will have specific requirements for handling, cleaning, and storage. Please ask your nearest state nursery for further information on how to handle, clean, and store the various seed types. Seed quality will be assessed at time of sale. Also, see seed collection pamphlet (PDF, 61KB).

Payment

The state nurseries use a voucher system of payment for seed. A copy of the voucher is given to the vendor (seller) and a check will follow in the mail. It will take approximately 2 to 4 weeks to receive payment.
