Forestry Technician - AdvancedWe seek creative, service-oriented individuals to join a team of professional employees dedicated to protecting and enhancing our natural resources. We employ individuals who can communicate positively with a variety of customer groups. DutiesPositions include responsibilities in either one or both of the following program areas: Assistant to ForesterIncorporate integrated forest management practices, analyze data, map woodlands, determine timber volumes, and mark or designate timber for harvest. Recommend site preparation and reforestation. Guide and assist private landowners during planting operations. Examine woodland to determine protection needs. Develop recommendations for protection and control of insect and disease attacks, fire, and grazing. Provide technical services related to forest tax law administration. Maintain records and prepare reports. Fire SuppressionAssist in forest fire suppression, pre-suppression, prevention, and forest management activities. Operate, repair, and maintain fire equipment and hand and power tools. Investigate fire origin and determine cause and action required. Assist with timber sale activities, timber mapping, cultural establishment, and cost-sharing projects. Scale logs and pulpwood on public lands. Required Technical Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesBasic silvicultural systems, timber cruising and marking principles, wood scaling principles and practices, tree identification, land description principles and use, map reading techniques, and tree planting techniques. Forest fire prevention, suppression, pre-suppression, and investigative techniques. Fire behavior and safe operation and maintenance of fire equipment and forestry related equipment including a hand compass. Report preparation and basic math and accounting skills. Special RequirementsMost positions will require a valid Wisconsin driver's license and some may also require a CDL (Commercial Driver's License).
