DutiesPerform professional forestry work in a combination of forest management and fire control duties listed below or as a specialist in one area. Forest ManagementConduct land examination, land surveying, forest product measurement, cultural cutting, forest research projects, and forest entomological and pathological surveys. Assist with administering and directing timber sales. Provide technical forestry assistance to public and private landowners. Assist with field administration of Forest Tax Law programs. Perform forest inventory tasks such as aerial photo interpretation, establishing plots, and cartography. Fire ControlDirect and train fire fighting crews and detection personnel within local emergency response partnerships. Map burned areas, estimate damage, and determine suppression costs. Investigate fire scenes to determine cause and enforce laws. Work with local governments to assess change in risk, define hazards and prepare plans to mitigate. Required Technical Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesFederal and state rules and regulations regarding forestry and government land surveys. Forest conservation, reforestation, and forest management principles. Logging and allied industries. Fire prevention and suppression. Federal and state conservation programs. Forest insect and disease identification. Use of surveying and drafting instruments. Desired TrainingGraduation from a college or university, accredited or affiliated with the Society of American Foresters, and with a bachelor's degree in forest management. Special RequirementsSome forester positions must meet Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) "recruit" requirements and must have law enforcement credentials prior to completion of the probationary period.
