Meteorological Data

WDNR has extracted, quality assured, and merged raw surface and upper air data from a number of stations for use in AERMOD. Land use information obtained from various sources allowed for processing surface characteristics within three kilometers of the instrumentation site to provide complete surface and profile files. A memorandum is available (aermet.pdf) that contains specific details on the AERMET processing. Any questions regarding the meteorological data should be directed to John Roth via email at john.roth@wisconsin.gov

NOTES & CORRECTIONS

February 2, 2007

A review of the changes to AERMET as part of the new version (06341) shows that the enhancements to importing ISHD data will not affect the AERMOD results significantly. The enhancements were applied during the 2006 processing with version 04300 using Fortran programs to adjust time, observation type, and to do simple data gap filling. Refer to the processing memo dated March 3, 2006 for details.

Several test cases were run using the previous AERMET (04300) with the WDNR modified ISHD data, the current AERMET (06341) with the raw ISHD data, and the current AERMET (06341) with the WDNR modified ISHD data. For one case, the resultant maximum AERMOD impacts were identical for all three samples. For the other two cases, AERMET 06341 provided different results when the raw ISHD data was used. In one case the AERMOD impact was 0.5% lower (0.9945 of the 04300 result) and in the other, the AERMOD impact was 0.6% higher (1.0062 of the 04300 result). In addition, for these two cases, the AERMOD impact was in a different location, on a different day, and the files had higher numbers of missing data.

Therefore, to remain completely consistent with previous data, the previous processed data files will be retained. The surface files created with version 04300 are modified to reflect the current version 06341, using WordPad. No new processing with AERMET was performed at this time. However, if changes to AERMET are made in the future, the WDNR will review and determine if revised processed meteorological data will be provided.
